Built in the early 20th century to ensure hygiene and food safety standards, the municipal slaughterhouse of Porreres opened in 1929 in a well-connected area on the outskirts of the village. Over time, the building underwent a complete transformation: in 2009 it became the Municipal Library, also housing the Municipal Archive and a University Centre. A children’s play and reading area was later added to encourage young readers, and in 2020 a youth space opened featuring the first comic book library — or Comicteca — in the Part Forana region. The building retains its original features — three naves, local marès sandstone, wooden beams and traditional Arabic roof tiles — along with the municipal coat of arms on the façade and a contemporary sculpture at the entrance. Today it stands as a living cultural space that bridges historical memory and everyday community use.
